Advisory practice · Player-founder charitable foundations
Many player-founder charities are registered, named, and operational — but need to demonstrate real impact to funders, trustees, and the communities they serve. Strategic Mantra closes that gap.
Find out how →Incorporation, objects, trustee registration — the legal scaffolding is well-supported. What comes next isn't.
There is no manual for designing a programme that funders will actually back. No guide to building the impact evidence that turns a one-off grant into a long-term partnership.
Most foundations end up running on goodwill, occasional momentum, and the founder's personal network — until one or all of those runs out.
"The ambition was always there. But three years in, we still couldn't show a funder what we'd actually done — or why it mattered."

How we work
Three ways to engage. Most clients start with the diagnostic — everything else follows from there.
01 — Entry point
Operational Diagnostic
A structured audit of your delivery against your charitable objects — governance, impact measurement, funder readiness, communications. You get a board-ready roadmap, not a report that sits in a drawer.
02 — Core engagement
Fractional CEO / COO
Embedded executive capacity on a retainer basis — typically four to eight days a month. Not remote advice. Actual operational leadership, sitting alongside your trustees and delivery team.
03 — Focused build
Project Work
Discrete, time-bounded deliverables: impact framework build, funder application, trustee recruitment campaign, comms strategy. Scoped and priced as a fixed fee. No surprises.

KPIs in the strategic funder reporting framework — designed and negotiated from scratch
The Paul Canoville Foundation existed on paper for years before it delivered at scale. What followed six years of embedded operational leadership — first as a trustee and Chair, then as CEO — was a large operational grant, an academic partnership, a national school network, an eLearning programme, and a values framework that now underpins everything the charity does.
Every outcome on this page was built from scratch. That is what Strategic Mantra does.
Raphael Frascogna
Founder, Strategic Mantra
Most people who advise charities have never run one. I have. For six years I was embedded in a nationally recognised player-founder charity — first as a trustee and Chair of the Board, then as CEO — accountable for what it delivers, how it reports, and whether the funders come back. That experience is the basis for everything Strategic Mantra does.
I have also founded a charitable fundraising initiative that has raised over £125,000 for childhood cancer causes, and I am a founding director of a community-owned sports facility operating as a Community Interest Company. Three sport-led vehicles, three legal structures, one consistent practice: taking organisations from ambition to operational reality.
I hold a UEFA B Licence and have played, coached, and managed across Steps 5–7 of the English football pyramid. When I sit across the table from a player-founder or their trustees, I understand the culture and the context from the inside.
If you're running a player-founder foundation and the gap between what it promises and what it delivers is keeping you up at night — that's the conversation we have. No consultancy pitch, no deck. Thirty minutes to understand where you are and whether this practice can help.
